Hung Out to Dry - Washing Line Solutions for Laundry Day

Hanging your clothes out to dry is one of the simplest ways of embracing the eco- and environmentally-friendly trend, especially in our sunkissed part of the world. The ‘relaxing’ chore of hanging up freshly washed clothes and sheets on a washing line, and watching them flap in the breeze as you soak up some vitamin D, makes laundry day something to look forward to.

Washing line solutions - be that retractable wash lines or rotary driers - also come with many benefits that should not be overlooked. The obvious one - whether you live in the suburbs or the city - is the fact that hanging your clothes out to dry will save you money. We’ve done the maths on tumble drying costs and how that adds up when wash day comes around a few times a week. (It can easily add R100/month to your electricity bill).

Hung out to dry in the suburbs

Living in the suburbs offers you the opportunity of installing a washing line in a sunny corner of your garden.

Rotary driers are generally the most popular due to their cost-effective and space-saving benefits. Their robust and sturdy construction, which includes a galvanized steel frame, makes them weather resistant - so they will last you for years. Ranging from 25m to 50m of hanging space, the design of rotary wash lines also makes them welcome time-savers, allowing you to hang large loads of laundry at one time (and you get an outdoor workout the same time)

 Washing lines

From a scientific viewpoint, sunlight is a natural bleaching and sanitizing agent, keeping your whites whiter and killing any bacteria, germs or dust mites. A further proven advantage of hanging your clothes on a washing line in the fresh air is the preservation of the fibres in your clothes, making them last longer. And unlike a tumble dryer, sunlight doesn’t cause shrinkage.

Hung out to dry in the city

Before the limited space restrictions of city living force you to go into debt and buy a tumble dryer, don’t overlook your balcony or patio and a retractable washing line. The clever design is ideal for small places; you simply pull the retractable clothesline out of a casing when it is needed and attach it to a wall or post directly opposite. The retractable washline solution means your clothes still air dry naturally even though you only have a small patio garden or balcony. The powder-coated heavy-duty outdoor solutions include 3 lines with 15m of hanging space or 5 lines with 40 m of hanging space. The other space-efficient alternative is the galvanized foldaway clothesline which gives you 9 lines, 16m of hanging space and a 30kg load capacity.

If you are really limited on space and your apartment has no outdoor balcony, then an indoor light-duty retractable washline, in a sunny spot, is an ideal solution - offering you 5 lines and 20m of hanging space.

So, when it comes to washing, ‘let it all hang out’ - for the sake of your health, your clothes and your pocket! 😊
